Esperanza 2016, Day 2: Monday

Hola!
Today was our first work day of our time here. We got up in the morning and had a talk with Edwardo and then we put a good three layers of sunscreen on and headed out the door. It was a very bumpy and curvy drive to where our work site was, but once we got there it was worth it. We meet the family we were working with and everybody introduced themselves and we got right to work. We started digging a foundation for the house and we got to use pick axes, jackhammers, shovels, and lots and lots of buckets. When we were digging we had to transfer the dirt from one place to the other and that's why we had to use so many buckets. After about three hours we finally sat down and ate the yummy food that the family and neighbors made for us and enjoyed our break time before it was over. After lunch we worked for another hour in the blazing hot sun and  eventually loaded everyone back in the bus. Once we were all on the bus we headed down to the border where the fence goes into the ocean and we got to experience first hand what it was like to be on the other side of the border fence. We walked along the fence and looked at all the paintings and names on the wall and took time to recognize how different the two sides were. The Mexico side had families playing in the water and having a great time, while the other side, was constantly having helicopters flying around and vehicles with armed United State guards in them and about a mile worth of nothing until the city of San Diego. Once we walked back to where we were dropped off, we got churros from a stand before we got back on the bus to head back home to La Pasada. Once we got back we all got clean and were able to shower and eat dinner followed by a game of volleyball until it got dark. When it got dark we heading inside and had our reflection time before eating a little bit of dessert (which was delicious).
Now we are ready to go to bed and start a new day tomorrow.

God bless.
Sydney and Caitlyn
